# Firmware updates

Keep your RoboDot updated to get the latest features and fixes. The device updates itself over the Internet — connect it as a Station to a hotspot or office network first.

## Storage

The update is staged and verified on the device's internal storage card before anything is installed. There is nothing to insert or prepare. If the update page says **Update needs an SD card**, the device's storage did not pass its check: restart the device with the power button and check again. If it repeats, contact support and quote the words after the colon. If the words say **storage is full**, delete old jobs from the Files page and check again.

## Updating a device on version 5.x

1. Open the device web UI and go to **Settings → Get Updates** (or browse to `http://<device-ip>/t4update.html`).
2.  Press **Check for Updates**. If a new version is available, the page announces it.

3.  Press **Install Update**. The device downloads, verifies, and installs on its own, with live progress.

4.  When installation finishes the device **restarts itself**. The page reconnects and confirms the new version.

:::warning
Do not power off the device while the page shows **Installing**. A lost WiFi connection during the _download_ is harmless — the download resumes automatically.

## Updating from version 3.x to 5.x (one time)

Version 5 installs in two stages. You do the first; the device does the second by itself.

**Stage 1 — Software Update (you):**

1. Connect RoboDot as a Station to the internet via a hotspot or office network.
2. Open the device's update page and press **Software Update**.
3. Watch the log: `Update started, keep device on.` … through `Successfully updated 1 files. Restart device and clear browser cache.`
4. **Restart the device with the power button.**

**Stage 2 — automatic:**

Leave the device powered on and connected to the Internet. About a minute after boot it checks in, downloads version 5, installs it, and restarts itself. If you keep the update page open you can watch the whole thing narrated in the log; otherwise the device simply comes back up on version 5.

Stage 2 can take several minutes on a slow hotspot. The device keeps retrying on its own — every few minutes at first, then every 30 minutes — so a unit left powered with Internet access completes the update by itself.
